Why Good Website Design Is Important

Whether your website is an information portal, an online shop, or a facility to interact with your clients directly, it is important that thought and consideration is given to both the design and functionality that your visitors will see and engage with. Getting this right can result in better client leads, satisfied customers and peace of mind.

The design and layout of your website will be the first thing people see when they visit, and first impressions count. Not only should they be presented with a visually appealing site that clearly reflects your company brand, they should also be able to easily navigate their way around and achieve their reason for visiting without being obstructed – whether that’s finding out key information, or making a purchase of a product.

It is also important that your website is created to work on all device screen sizes (known as ‘responsive’ or ‘mobile-friendly’), and attention has been given to SEO – as both these factors will have a significant impact on how both visitors and search engines rate your site.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How much does a website cost?

This completely depends on a number of factors, such as:

• How many pages/sections are there?
• What type of features & functions are needed?
• Is it an online shop?
• Do you require an option for user registration/accounts?

The larger and more complicated the website, the longer it will take and more expensive it will cost. Once we have a better understanding of your requirements we can then review how much time we estimate it will take, what (if any) bought in technology or plugins are required, and provide you with a quote.

Please contact us to discuss your project.

How do I brief in my website?

As websites can have a lot of sections, pages, features and functions it is best that it all gets written down so both you and us have something to work from. But if you first wish to discuss the project and options available, you are welcome to give us a call or arrange to visit us in our London office.

A website brief should include as much information about your requirements as possible, to avoid unexpected delays or cost implications later on. A site map that overviews the main sections and pages you plan to have is important, and an outline on any features or functions you may require should be listed. These could include:

• If it is an online shop – any retail features you may want (such as gift vouchers, variable delivery options and rates based on weight/size/location, user account login, bulk order discounts, customer reviews, etc.).

• Newsletter sign-up form.

• A blog or news section.

• Details of any forms required.

• Multi-Language or multi-currency options.

• Database connection/interaction with external systems (such as a property portal, advertising feeds, etc.)

• Live chat or community forums.

To help in drafting your brief you are also welcome to fill out and submit our online Website Questionnaire.

How long does it take to build a website?

Depending on the size and complexity of your website, the process can take from a couple of weeks for small websites to a couple of months or more for larger sites.

The general process would involve:

1. Project review and strategy.
2. Prototype layout design and presentation.
3. Building a working template ready for content to be added.
4. Testing and review of a working site, adding content (pages, images, text, etc.).
5. Once all is ready and approved, the site is made live.

There are a number of other things to be considered, such as setting up hosting, email account, page redirects (if replacing an existing site), shipping settings, etc.

What website platform should I use?

Whilst there are a number of options available, from our experience we believe in most cases using WordPress offers the best balance of being able to create unique design layouts and keeping production costs to a minimum. But we would review each website requirement in detail before advising on the best platform solution, as sometimes alternative options may be more suitable.

WordPress is the most widely used platform, powering more than 60 million websites large and small. It has a very easy to use admin (CMS) and over 50,000 plugins available, allowing it to be configured to meet almost all requirements.

We would usually create a bespoke WordPress theme to match the design layouts we create.

Can I edit the website myself?

Most websites we create do allow us to generate user admin control, allowing you the ability to login and update pages and page content as and when you wish. However, how much control is required should be addressed at the briefing stage of the project, if you only need access to update selected areas (such as a blog or shop) only, it can sometimes be cheaper not do develop unnecessary admin sections.

Can you manage the website for me?

We can certainly help update your website as and when requested, it’s a service we provide to many of our clients.

However, clients will be responsible for liaising with their own enquiries and customers via any online communications and orders placed.

Will my website include SEO?

We ensure all the websites we develop are compatible with best SEO practices, and for WordPress websites we can also include an SEO plugin to give you greater control on how search engines read each web page.

However there are a number of factors that contribute towards good SEO, including the quality and usefulness of your page content, how frequently you update your website, and taking advantage of backlinks from other websites.

We can certainly guide you on some good SEO techniques, but we do not offer SEO as a specific service.

How can I get on the first page in Google?

Only Google determines which websites and web pages appear first for any specific search entered in to its platform. They use a combination of many factors to rank each web page, so a good understanding of best SEO techniques is important to help boost your rankings.
